RETROFIT: FROLUNDA TORG SHOPPING CENTER GEOTHERMAL DESIGN HIGHLIGHT

Frölunda Torg is one of the largest shopping centers in Scandinavia, totaling 1.2 million SQFT in Gothenburg, Sweden. The shopping center receives 12 million visitors per year and has over 200 shops and businesses that were originally heated by district steam heat and electricity for cooling. The size of the borefield was based on the building footprint as a starting point where inclined boreholes up to the property line to capture a larger ground volume. Installation was completed in 2019 in the basement of the building where 80, 3.5-inch boreholes were drilled to a depth of 650 feet.

The BTES geothermal system was able to cover 52% of the heating load capacity and 31% cooling capacity. The BTES system’s ability for seasonal temperature optimization allows for reduced peak demand by shifting heating and cooling to geothermal and only supplementing with district steam for a small period.
